Nacida sombra is where flamenco dance meets the great female creators of the Spanish Golden Age and from Latin America. It’s about flamenco dancing to the lines of the classic female authors of the 16th and 17th centuries and doing it so in feminine plural. Four imaginary letters written at different times and places are spinning the dialogue among the voices of four female artists: Teresa de Jesús, María de Zayas, María Calderón and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. Through dance, music and words, we discover their experiences, concerns, creations and secrets in order to find the ties which bind them: loneliness as the price to pay for courage, the labyrinth of love and the painful quest for freedom.
The mystic agony of Teresa de Jesús inside her convent cell; the palace intrigue of novelist María de Zayas in the court halls; the lights and shadows of renowned actress María Calderón on the stage of a corral de comedias, and the dreams and controversy of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz in her lush garden. Four phases of the Moon, four spaces, four women: four worlds to the authors’ very own texts make up the guiding thread: it’s their word to live by. Poems, verses and texts coexist with the singing, the cante, and they shape and give meaning to the music and dialogue through dance and space. The wideness of the flamenco expression allows individuals to address these very different worlds and to recreate their poetry from the evocation of the verses of Sor Juana, by using ‘back and forth’ styles to the austerity and the paradoxical purity of Teresa de Jesús’ Vivo sin vivir en mí (living without living in me) ‘por soleá’.
Moreover, Nacida Sombra merges the different flamenco references of the popular music of the Baroque era, such as the folía, the chaconne, the Marizápalos dance, the romance or the Christmas carol; a dialogue among traditions linked throughout centuries.
Put together by the choreographic talent of Rafaela Carrasco, one of the great creators of contemporary flamenco, and the dramaturgy of Álvaro Tato, one of the emerging writers in the Spanish scene, the female voices of classic literature come to a new life. These ladies, Nacidas Sombras (Born a shadow) awaken our awareness in the 21st century.
